American Goldfinch Carduelis tristis
American Goldfinch Carduelis tristis
Often seen in weedy fields and a year round visitor to thistle feeders the American Goldfinch is one of the latest nesting birds, probably due to the availability of nesting materials and access to harvested seeds for feeding young.
Almost exclusively found in flocks, the gregarious songbird is the only member of its family to have a complete molt of its body in the spring and fall.
Favoring open woods and edge habitat with open fields its diet consists of mostly seeds with a preference for thistles as it also uses the down for its nest lining.
