Black-and-white Warbler
Mniotilta varia
The Black-and-white Warbler has an unusually long hind toe claw on each foot, allowing it to behave more like a nuthatch or creeper as it clings to the bark of trees.
For a warbler it is unusually aggressive as it attacks many other species such as Red-breasted Nuthatch, Black-capped Chickadee and Tennessee Warbler.
It breeds in mature or second growth deciduous or mixed forests often on high rocky hillsides and ravines, where it feeds on caterpillars, beetles, wood borers and spiders. It can be found within the Eastern U.S. and Canada, as it arrives on breeding grounds in late April.
