Magnolia Warbler Dendroica magnolia
Magnolia Warbler Dendroica magnolia
The Magnolia Warbler’s territory is amongst the low conifers such as young spruce, hemlocks, balsam fir and pines of Canada, far northeastern U.S. and south through the Appalachian forests, as it feeds on insects, especially spruce budworm, when available in high numbers. It takes most insects from the undersides of vegetation and gleans them from conifer needles, leaves and twigs as it hops along branches. When insects are scarce it will eat berries.
It nests in low dense conifers, especially spruce or hemlock, usually less than ten ft. above the ground.
It’s spring and fall migrations always transverse across the Gulf of Mexico.
